The first Annual Barden Benner Carter Memorial Golf Tournament was held
August 17, 2002 at Boston Hills Country Club in Boston Heights, raising over
$12,000. The Tournament supports the
Barden Benner Carter Memorial Fund,
which provides college scholarships to graduating Cleveland Heights seniors
and supports the area youth and high school hockey teams. The fund is
established in the honor of Kyle Barden (16), Brendon Benner (18) and Milton
Carter Jr. (18); all three were involved in a fatal auto accident on
February 11, 2001. Each year, the families of Kyle, Brendon and Milton
award three college scholarships in their honor. The Memorial Fund has
awarded $8,500 in scholarships to six students and this year, sent one
Cleveland Heights hockey player to goalie camp.
The golf tournament sold out within a short time after announcing the event.
We were astonished and very grateful for the turnout. We had a full golf
course of players and a beautiful day for a golf tournament. The golf
outing was an excellent time to get friends and families together. There
were also a number of family teams playing together. Many golfers came
from northeastern Ohio and others from surrounding states.
One of the golfers was Ron Harper, former NBA player and winner of
five Championship rings.

The funds that were raised came from company sponsorships and individual
donations. There were signs designating company sponsors displayed
throughout the golf course. Each golfer has an opportunity to review the
sponsor’s sign before playing though to the next hole. The Bowne Printing
company was the Tournament Title Sponsor. Classic Lexus of Mentor donated
the use of a brand new Lexus automobile to use as a hole-in-one prize. If a
player was to make a hole in one, that golfer would win the car and drive it
home. No one made it, but we all hoped that someone would. Other sponsors
were: the new Cleveland Force, Realty One, Cole National, Nottingham-Spirk,
Progressive Insurance, Rubin Guttman and Associates, Guardian Auto Glass,
Real Estate Mortgage Corp., Watson Wyatt, Breen & Fox, Cleveland Height
Teachers Union, Cleveland Heights Alumni, The Gentile Family, Westside
Automotive Group-Land Rover, Yanish Brother Construction, Unity Church of
Greater Cleveland, Cleveland Browns and many other area contributors.
We also offered a putting contest, skill contests and a silent auction.
After golf, lunch and then more golf, the Boston Hills Country Club staff
served a wonderful dinner and skill awards were presented.
We have a great number of people to be thankful to for helping make this an
exciting and memorable event for all of us.
